Thanks for your support and interest in helping me find a cure for Alzheimer's. This is a personal journey for me and my family as so many of us have been affected by the disease!
In 2020-2021 Covid has been in the forefront of all of our minds and rightfully so. Our lives have been dictated by Covid .. but as we continue to fight Covid, Alzheimer's hasn't stopped.
The need is still there.. with more than six million Americans living with the disease. Between 2000-2019 heart disease decreased by 73% while Alzheimer's increased by 145%. Less than 10% of Alzheimer's patients are genetic. But is you have the double APOE4 genes your risk factor of developing Alzheimer's is about 90%.
I continue with my efforts to fund research and find a cure, hoping for a cure in our lifetime!
Aduhelm, the new Biogen drug is not yet the answer. It was rushed thru the trails. It is too risky (can cause brain bleeds and swelling of the brain) and many Drs. will not prescribe it. It is also $65,000 a year and will bankrupt Medicare!
So the research continues. The Alzheimer's Association helps fund over 650 independent research projects worldwide, looking at the disease from almost every angle.
Some of the more interesting research has been:
Studying P-glycoprotein, a critical toxin pump in the body that has the ability to remove plaques from the brain.
Studying statins as a contributing factor to Alzheimer's. Lipophilic statins (Simvastatin, Lovastatin, Atorvastatin, Fluvastatin) were shown to destroy the metabolism of the first area of the brain affected by Alzheimer's and more than double your risk of dementia.
Researchers found an imaging technique that measures brain flow in the back of the eye and may offer an non-invasive way to detect Alzheimer's .
But in the meantime, diet and exercise remain the best prevention for Alzheimer's.
So keep eating the healthy Mediterranean or Mind Diet . Get your cardio up a few times a week, challenge your brain by learning something new and stay socially and physically active. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep without sleeping pills or benadryl (or the like) a night!
