Welcome to Jandy’s Clan!
Jandy's Clan-named "Jandy" for the partnership between Jan and Randy is truly a blend of family and friends. Eight years ago I was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a dementia related illness, and subsequently I had to end my engineering career at Texas Instruments as a result of my MCI. Instead of treating my MCI diagnosis as a death sentence, I decided to treat it as a "life sentence" meaning that I was going to live my life to the fullest and not sit around waiting for life to be taken away from me. As a result, I now spend most of my time with family and friends and doing the things that I enjoy doing most like playing golf! Staying social is very important in helping deal with the effects of MCI, so I continue living life to its fullest while hoping to beat the odds of developing Alzheimer's with my increased risks.
Since my diagnosis, I have purposely become more involved with the Alzheimer's Association at both the local level and national levels. Locally, I began my volunteer work as a member of the Early Stage Advisory Group. This group enabled me to be chosen to serve with ten others for one term with the National Early Stage Advisory Group. Most recently, Randy and I were asked to serve on the board of directors for the Dallas and NE Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. These volunteer roles allow Randy and me to raise awareness, reduce stigma of the disease, and advocate to increase funding for research and support programs just to name a few. We are still very much involved with our Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support Group that meets monthly at our church, Bent Tree Bible Fellowship, in Carrollton. Additionally, I try and participate in clinical research trials that will enable researchers and doctors to find better treatments to slow, prevent, and ultimately find a cure for Alzheimer’s. I am doing everything I can physically and mentally to minimize the effects of MCI, but I also need help from others like you. As I learned while in the workforce, each of us can make a difference, so please consider joining Jandy’s Clan and walking with us on Saturday, Nov 6. If you can’t walk with our team, will you still please consider making a donation to Jandy's Clan, so that we can help drive research toward treatment, prevention, and ultimately find a cure in addition to providing care and support to all those facing Alzheimer's.
This year Jandy's Clan will walk
