This fall, I'll be joining the Baker Tilly team to Walk to End Alzheimer's® to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's care, support, and research.
My grandfather John Sebastian suffers from dementia. Brian and I are lucky that he still recognizes us, but sadly he doesn't remember my grandmother's passing or why he is no longer living in the home he spent most of his life in. He often asks us if his mother and brother are still living (they are not), which is not only heartbreaking but challenging to navigate since regardless of how we answer, he doesn't remember and asks again several minutes later. My great aunt Dolores also suffers from dementia, but hers is later stage to the point where she is non-verbal. For the past 18 months, due to COVID, my family’s visits with her in her memory care unit have involved us standing outside communicating with her through a microphone on the other side of a window. My grandfather on my dad’s side, Marlin, died from Alzheimer's several years ago. These diseases have affected not only my family, but many others, and we can only hope that with continued scientific research, a cure or better treatments will emerge.
Every dollar you donate helps the Alzheimer's Association® provide care and support to those facing Alzheimer's and all other dementia, and advance critical research. I have pledged to raise $1,000 between now and November 13, the date of the walk. If you would like to join me for the walk, please let me know! If you're interested in donating, my donation page can be found here:
Thank you to those have donated so far. I understand that these are challenging times. There are many requests for support and so many good causes for giving. Whether you can donate to this cause or not, I hope you will stand with me in this fight in whatever way you can. Together, we can end Alzheimer's.
Thank you for helping advance Alzheimer's support, care and research.
