Home Care Assistance honors and walks in memory of Don Rickards, committed church member, an avid backpacker, and runner, jokester, accountant and number whiz, father, and grandfather. He was born to missionary parents in Tunisia and was the oldest of four children. His childhood stories were full of tales of boat trips across the Atlantic, being rescued from summer camp as the French began a bombing campaign in Algeria, and trips to Pompeii. He met his wife, Betty, at a church in Fort Worth, Texas, where his dad was the pastor at the time. They have two daughters and six granddaughters.

As a committed church member and a generous person, Don was always ready to help people out with money or time. He remembered wearing ill-fitting clothes and shoes as a missionary kid and didn't want others to needlessly experience hardship. He loved to joke around: trying out new puns, tripping his wife and daughters by kicking their feet while walking, and riding grocery carts up and down the aisles at the store to embarrass Betty. He loved food fads-- drinking apple cider vinegar decades before it became popular because he read it in an obscure book from the early 1900s.

After his parents needed full-time care, he sat with them seven days a week for years on end regardless of the weather or his work schedule. Shortly after his dad's death, his words started coming in fits and starts with new mispronunciations of words. After retiring early, he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease at age 59. He also had a rare diagnosis of logopenic Primary Progressive Aphasia which can, in rare cases, be associated with Alzheimer's Disease. Just four short years later, he passed away surrounded by his family and his beloved caregivers-- several of whom felt like family was born to missionary parents in Tunisia and met and married his wife, Betty, in Ft. After his parents needed full-time care, he sat with them seven days a week for years. Shortly after his dad’s death, his words started coming in fits and starts with mispronunciations of words he never had trouble with previously. After retiring early, he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at 59. He also had a rare component of logopenic primary progressive aphasia that can, in rare cases, be present in Alzheimer’s disease. Just four short years later, he passed away surrounded by his family and his beloved caregivers— several of whom felt like family.
