My mom (Linda Sojda) and I are joining Becky's Lovebugs as we walk to help find a cure to end Alzheimer's. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk, we are raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease. No one should have to receive this life-changing diagnosis or watch a loved one suffer, as we have seen one too many times.
Linda and Becky met 48 years ago while working together for the NY State Tax department. Little did they know they would be lifelong friends throughout years of living in different states. Distance knew no bounds when it came to their relationship, and no matter how many years went by, they were always connected through the means of going back home to Buffalo. It was inevitable that our families shared a special bond made up of memories shared by Linda, Becky, Jim and Tom many years ago before kids came along. Becky was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's in 2014 and fought the good fight until she lost her battle in January, 2021. Her family continues to learn how to navigate life without her and we couldn't be more grateful to walk in her honor.
Unfortunately, Becky is not the only one we have lost to this dreadful disease. My mom's sister and my beloved Aunt Ro (Rosemary) was also diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's in June, 2015. Her fight seemed short but her decline was rapid and her quality of life was significantly compromised in the year following. Rosemary lost her life to Alzheimer's in October 2016. We can't help but think she should be here to celebrate every holiday with us and see her great Nephews grow up. Not a Buffalo sporting event goes by without a shared memory of her dedication as a fan and her loyalty to her hometown. We miss her so much!
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us now more than ever — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
