I started Team Frazier in honor of my grandfather, Robert Spotwood Frazier Sr., (better known to me as Pop-Pop) who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s a few years ago.
Once he was diagnosed and I researched the disease, I learned how little awareness is out there about this disease and that there is no cure. Once I saw someone I loved and looked up to being affected by it and seeing how it also had an affect on my grandma’s health who was taking care of him, I was immediately overcome with the need to help. I wanted to help spread information about this disease and help in any small way that I can to find a cure if not for my grandpa then for someone else’s grandpa down the road.
My grandpa passed away in June 2017 but he was no longer the same person that I was used to seeing my entire life.
My grandpa was a US Marine and a Baltimore City policeman. He was the strongest man I knew and the center of my entire family. He did not have a stable family life growing up but you would never know that from the way he loved and guided my family. He taught us manners by poking us with a fork if we put our elbows on the table during dinner time which as kids we loved and laughed but also learned our lesson. It was really hard to see that same man so helpless and not know how to even use a fork to eat dinner anymore. It was even harder to talk to someone I love so much knowing that he had no idea who I was.
My grandpa may have no longer remembered names or relations but until the very end of his life he always said the same statement that he made during every holiday or family get together: “This is a great family.”
I am now walking to honor my grandpa in hopes that other great families in the world can be together and not have to deal with the heartbreak that comes with this disease. I am now determined more than ever to fight for everyone else’s memories that is still alive and has a chance to be saved if we find a cure.
We cannot find a cure without raising funds to advance research to treat and prevent Alzheimer's. The Walk to End Alzheimer's is a great and easy way to help reach this goal.
Please join me in this fight and know that all funds donated will also help provide programs and support to improve the lives of the millions of Americans who are affected with this heartbreaking disease.
