I'm leading the way to Alzheimer's first survivor by participating with my family as Team M&M in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®. The now 6th leading cause of death in the US took my Grandma Maude and Aunt Maxine. It slowly robbed them of their mind, first taking their confidence and ability to be independent, and then stealing their memories until they couldn't remember those of us who loved them. But, it didn't stop there. It also devastated their children and siblings who cared for them. We watched for more than 10 years as they at first would forget we had come to visit to eventually thinking we were complete strangers. We can only imagine the constant confusion, frustration, fear, sadness, loneliness they must have felt, and there was nothing we could do to help.
