On March 18th, 2016 we sat in the small room at the neurologists office awaiting the results of months of testing. I told myself, and my close friends, “as long as she doesn’t have Alzheimer’s it’ll be fine”. The doctor looked at me and I could feel the angst as he shakily shut the door and sat down on the stool. He held my gaze and the words he muttered changed our lives forever. With one word my whole world came violently crashing down around me. Just like that. After the appointment I pulled over at a Shell gas station off of Gallows Road and sat there staring at the row of gas pumps for at least an hour. I remember my hands were shaking uncontrollably and the right corner of my lip continuously twitched. It was Alzheimer’s.
I’ll never forget the look on the doctor’s face, “there’s no cure or proven effective treatment currently for Alzheimer’s Disease”. For months I wrestled with pure helplessness and fiery anger. How could this happen to her? What do we do now? I decided to put my life and career on hold, opting to devote a year to helping my family setup the foundations of what our new life was going to look like. I spent invaluable time with my mother. Playing brain games, taking 3 mile walks everyday, and simply enjoying each others company. Unfortunately, times like those are a thing of the past. Distant but fond memories. Now daily tasks like getting dressed, eating, pouring a cup of water, and communicating are laborious for her. We have unfortunately seen a serious decline with her condition since the Walk last year but thanks to our friends and family we are taking each day as it comes.
That is why I captain this team every year and I will continue to every year until we find a cure for this despicable disease. Join me in the fight to preserve families, maintain long lasting friendships, and save memories. Nobody should have to worry about when the last time their loved one will recognize them is, or when their final memory will vanish.
Thank you for helping advance Alzheimer's support, care and research.
