MY 2021 WALK GOAL: $500!
As you may know, I am a hospice chaplain. Many of my patients (past and present) have had Alzheimer's and other dementias. The toll on families and caregivers is enormous. The emotional toll is even more. In the last few years, close friends have learned that their loved one has dementia. It raised my awareness of the need for even MORE work to find treatments and a cure for dementia!
My long, circuitious route to being a pastor and chaplain started in the 1970s, when my grandfather lived with dementia towards the end of his life. The man who was a school psychologist, was extremely well-read, served as an elder in his church, and was a caring, loving grandparent was gently, slowly losing the ability to walk, talk and converse with us. I remember hearing him play the piano, and enjoying his homemade bread. Yeasty, buttery white bread with its "come-hither" smell was made by my mom as well... and now by me.
There are things we can remember and celebrate about our family, friends, and patients with Alzheimer's. We are their memory. We offer stories and keep linking them to the present with our visits. And we can also make a difference for them in supporting walks like this one.
I hope you'll consider sponsoring me on this walk. As little as $5, $10, or $25 will make a difference. OR -- if you'd like to walk with us, you're welcome to join the DuFief Defenders team! Unlike other fundraising walks, the Alzheimer's Walk costs you nothing to register. Your presence is a huge support in and of itself.
I need your support to do my part! Please make a donation to help the Alzheimer's Association advance research into methods of treatment, prevention and, ultimately, a cure for Alzheimer's. For the millions already affected by the disease, the Association offers care, education, support and resources in communities nationwide.
With my thanks and prayers for a brighter future ...
Thank you for helping advance Alzheimer's support, care and research.
