Happy New Year and Welcome to my Team Page for the Silicon Valley Walk to End Alzheimer's 2021!
It has been a little over a year since my father Kim Small passed away from complications from Alzheimer's, my mother Martha pre-deceasing his death also from Alzheimer's... and what a year it has been. Challenging and life-changing for all of us.
I think about what it would have been like to have been the caregiver during these last few months. I cannot imagine really how much more stress and anxiety I could have dealt with - but I see caregivers and those living with Alzheimer's each day coping and dealing with the unsettling landscape and moving target of what became our new "normal." I grieve but also -and most importantly- I am in awe and inspired by the stories of their strength and courage.
Resources are scarce and even scarcer during times of trouble and uncertainty and that's why it's so important - critical, really - to continue to support the Alzheimer's Association and its ultimate mission to find a cure, while providing an incredible array of free services to anyone impacted by this terrible disease WHICH DID NOT TAKE A BREAK BECAUSE OF COVID. In fact, some studies point to potential deleterious effects of Covid-19 on aging populations' cognitive functioning. Not good:(
This year, not only am the Captain for my Team, but I am also taking a more active volunteer role as a Committee Member.
As long as Alzheimer's does not have a cure, I'll be a part of this effort to "delete" this disease. Having lost both my parents, aunts, grandmother and too many friends to Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, I feel it is my duty and honor to carry on with the Alzheimer's Association's Mission to Find the Cure.
Please join me again when the time is right for you. No pressure, no worries. Just when the time is right for you.
As always, Mary Lynn
