WHY I PARTICIPATE IN THE ALZHEIMER’S WALK?
As I was reading the Alzheimer’s Fact Sheet about three years ago, I was in awe that 1 in 3 Seniors will die from Dementia! That meant that SIX members of my family could be going through this same “Long Goodbye Journey” that my family has been going through these last 9 years with my husband Don. As Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia advance through the brain, it can lead to mood and behavior changes, unfounded suspicions about family, friends and professional caregivers, as well as more serious memory loss and behavior changes. In reality, the patient dies twice —once to the slow and gradual psychological changes and then the final physical death.
It has been heart breaking to see gradual changes in my husband’s personality over the years—he is still the same person and yet he isn’t. About four years ago, as a result of these changes, I realized that I had actually been grieving for Don—the REAL Don, the Don that had gradually and slowly disappeared— yet physically he was still alive! We realize that Don no longer is responsible for what he might say or do—it is the result of his brain deterioration. In spite of these sometimes unfavorable changes, we all LOVE and CHERISH the person Don is now. Our love for Don will never change, and Oh, how we cherish the special moments when he does respond to us! In spite of being robbed of so much, we know Don does know we are his family and that we love him. Deep down, we know that Don loves us as well!. Oh, how we cherish a “special wink” he gives us on occasion after a little coaching, as well as his special smile! We know there still is a “SPARK” of memory there! I don’t want ANYONE else to go through this long painful Journey, either as a patient or family member. Together, with the dollars we raise, the Alzheimer’s Association can provide our suffering families with care and support, as well as advancing critical research toward methods of treatment and prevention.
Thank you for however you might chose to support this cause.
