Soon after moving into my home in La Quinta in 2002, my Mom and Dad visited from Pennsylvania.  As we visited one day around the kitchen table, I noticed Mom standing as if in a trance looking at a midnight blue vase on the table.  In slow motion, she reached out to the vase and gently touched the smooth glass as if she were trying to understand the beautiful smooth, texture of the vase.  This was so unlike her and, even then, made me feel bad for some reason – she had this look of vulnerability which terrified me.

Fast forward3 years.  Mom has an official Alzheimer’s diagnosis.  Dad is resolved to nurture and care for her no matter what – but nonetheless terrified although stoic.  Since they live in a very rural area south of Buffalo, Joe and I resolve to move them to the desert away from the horrible winter cold and snow so that we can care for them both.

Thus, their May, 2005 move to the desert began our tearful “long goodbye” to Mom who passed June 15, 2009 at her desert home.

Now, my Dad resides in memory care at Pacifica in Palm Springs.  Here we go again.  Another “long goodbye.”

This explains why I volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association whose vision is “A World Without Alzheimer’s and All Other Dementia®”.  With your “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” support, we can provide care/comfort/support to those living with Alzheimer’s and all other dementia as well as their care providers, friends and family; support and fund research to accelerate the global progress of new treatments, prevention and, ultimately, cures; and advocate for public policies that increase and fund critical federal and state support and programs for all those affected as well as advocate for critical governmental research funding.

Please join the Coachella Valley Advisory Council and Joe and me in changing the trajectory of Alzheimer’s and All Other Dementia so that you and yours won’t ever experience the “long goodbye.”

Please join us for the 2020 semi-virtual Walk to End Alzheimer’s and All Other Dementia.

Thank you for your support,
