Earlier this year, I held my father's hand as he passed from a combination of dementia, pneumonia and COVID. It was one of the worst moments in my life. Because of dementia, he could not at all participate in his medical care. I felt helpless as he slipped away.
Before dementia set in, Dad was robust and strong for his age. Even into his 90's, he hiked with us and joined me on a cruise to Alaska and one to Mexico. As dementia claimed his mind, he could not live independently and resided in Pacifica memory care in Palm Springs.
Joe's father, my mother and Dad all passed from dementia/dementia-related complications. We wonder if we too will develop dementia as we grow older and, to be honest, we are scared of what might happen.
And, I don't want others to face dementia as they grow older.
That is why I am an Alzheimer's Association volunteer.
The Alzheimer’s Association vision is “A World Without Alzheimer’s and All Other Dementia®”. With your “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” support, we can provide care/comfort/support to those living with Alzheimer’s and all other dementia as well as their care providers, friends and family; support and fund research to accelerate the global progress of new treatments, prevention and, ultimately, cures; and advocate for public policies that increase and fund critical federal and state support and programs for all those affected as well as advocate for critical governmental research funding.
Please join the Coachella Valley Advisory Council and Joe and me in changing the trajectory of Alzheimer’s and All Other Dementia so that you and yours won’t ever experience the “long goodbye.”
Please join us for the 2021 Walk to End Alzheimer’s and All Other Dementia.
