I walk for my Opa, Karl Moertz. He was a kind and gentle soul, who enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved to walk the dog, share a sweet treat, and spend time with me- his only grandchild. And despite living on the other side of the world and only speaking German, we were always very close.
So close that when Alzheimer’s began to take over his life, I left college my junior year and flew to Vienna to just be with him. It was during my time spent there with him that inspired me to care for others in need and pursue a career in nursing.
While in nursing school, I took a job as a nursing assistant at the local SNF on the severe Alzheimer's unit. To this day I still remember all of the laughs, tears, and lessons learned from caring for those patients and their family members.
Unfortunately, as we were oceans apart and I was busy caring for others, I was not there for my Opa when he was tragically taken by Alzheimer’s. So today, I walk for him and all of those who have lived, loved, and lost to this terrible disease.
Please help advance the care, support, and research efforts to End Alzheimer’s by donating today. No donation is too small.
Ich liebe dich Opa
