Friends and Family,
I can honestly say I never expected a year in my life to have the challenges that 2020 has brought. Obviously, no one foresaw a pandemic that would continue to alter our day-to-day lives and affect so many in our midst these past 6 months. And, as much as we knew it was coming, the challenge of continuing to live as a family dealing with Alzheimer's Disease has been incredibly difficult.
Nancy just passed the 7 year anniversary of her diagnosis with Younger Onset Alzheimer's Disease. We learned years ago this process would be marked by a relatively long period of slow decline followed by a shorter period of more rapid loss of function, and for 6 years we were clearly in the slow decline period. However, over the past 8 months, we have definitely seen an acceleration of Nancy's losses which have been magnified by the decreases in social engagement dictated by our society's response to COVID 19.
This is why I am once again asking for your help to support our good friends at the Alzheimer's Association. Whereas for several years the Alz Association was our partner in being involved in Awareness, Advocacy, and Research activities in our pursuit to do as much as possible to change the course of this disease, this past year they have more been our provider in caring for the needs of Nancy and our family as we have entered more difficult and challenging times.
Like many organizations in the year of COVID, the challenge to raise needed funding for a NPO cause is much more difficult. The needs have actually increased, as seen by the increase in calls to the Alz hotline and increase in need for services to caregivers now at home more with less social interaction than previously. And even the Walk to End Alzheimer's has had to change it's format, with no centralized walk this year. Rather, walkers with walk on their own yet the funds needed to continue the work of the Alzheimer's Association are more important than ever.
The Alzheimer's Association is the largest private funding source for Alzheimer's research in the world. They are also the leading organization providing care coordination, education, and support for those affected by Alzheimer's in the world. Our family continues to witness, and now receive, the incredible work this organization does, and we are blessed to have a small part in this.
My goal this year continues to be $10,000, but I am confident we as a team can exceed this despite the financial challenges of 2020.. I trust many of you will be able to assist us again this year and we will be able to reach this goal.
On behalf of Nancy, our family, and the 5.8 million others in the USA with Alzheimer's, thank you for your support!
Thank you for helping us advance Alzheimer's support, care and research!
