This year, my parents celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary (June 2nd). The celebration looked quite different when Alzheimer's AND Covid-19 are involved. There's not much more I can add than what the photograph above says - LOVE!
Alzheimer's has a devastating impact on so many more than just the one with the disease. In a sick and twisted way, my mother is the lucky one! People see her photographs and say, "oh how sad" or "what a tragic situation...". It is sad and tragic for us, the ones watching the slow decline of things (words, skills, creativity, people, places, humor, personal care, daily objects & routines, then function, mobility, breath and death).
My mother, she is living each day - minute - sometimes seconds, and going with the flow. She still has her feistiness. She still loves and talks about children. She still enjoys food! Mom still loves.... in her own special way, and she loves her Bobby!
This is indeed the life not planned nor desired for my family. However, in the midst of the sadness, confusion, disease, isolation and unrest of 2020 thus far, my parents seeing each other for their 59th anniversary was the most wonderful gift we've had in a while!
