Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive degenerative disorder. It is the 6th leading cause of death in South Carolina. Alzheimer’s is characterized by memory loss, confusion and a variety of mental disabilities. The cause of the disease is unknown, but is significantly associated with familial incidence. The disease may began as early as forty years of age, but is commonly seen and diagnosed after age sixty years of age. Researchers are finding the incidence of the disease to be increasing as the average life expectancy increases. Alzheimer’s disease is overwhelming affecting many families and friends within our very own community. The disease is found to affect more women than men, and is seen more commonly in African American and Hispanic women.
