I am walking for “Team RoRo”
Sharon Maurer's four grandchildren know her as "RoRo," a compassionate, caring mom, wife, grandmother, teacher, and friend with a huge heart! She taught us to always put others first and look for the best in everyone we meet. Even as the disease robs her of all the wonderful memories, I am still amazed by her kindness and sweet soul as she continues to represent those values that have guided her her entire life.
In 2012, Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This horrible disease has turned our family upside down. Our lives are forever changed and what was once normal for our family is no more! Each stage of this disease brings new obstacles and hurdles. In March due to her progressive decline we had to make the devastating decision to move mom to a memory care assisted living home. To say we are all heartbroken is an understatement!
It has been a very big decision to speak out publicly about Mom’s diagnosis. Initially, I felt as though I was betraying her, but now I am reminded each time I visit her that if I step up, I might make a difference and prevent another family from all this pain. I never thought I would become an Alzheimer’s advocate, but I have to fight for Mom and all the many people who are unable to speak out. To be told there is no cure and no real treatment for someone you love is unimaginable.
I recently heard that if we filled 46 football fields with people that would represent the number of women alone living with Alzheimers and that number is expected to grow! Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease. All proceeds and funds go to Alzheimer’s care, methods of treatments, prevention and, ultimately, a cure!
