Friends & Family -
I am so excited to share in this event with you all!! Thank you for all the support as our family walked through this journey in our lives! It is with the help & support of each of you, our loved ones, that we are able to move forward each day!!!
This year will be the eighth year that my family will participate in the Charlotte Walk to End Alzheimer’s. We named our team, Just Keep Swimming, in reference to the movie Finding Nemo. For those of you who have not seen the movie, one of the main characters, Dory, suffers from memory loss. She says, “When life gets you down do you wanna know what you’ve got to do? Just Keep Swimming. Just Keep Swimming.” We wanted our team name to be light and funny since we we're walking for such a heavy cause.
Many you are aware that my mother, Marie Steed, had Alzheimer's. This disease has devastated my family. In December of 2018, we lost my mom to the disease after a long, hard battle. She left behind so many friends and family members. She was a wife of almost 50 years, a mother, and grandmother to six beautiful girls. Our loss was great.
Dementia has affected so many peoples families that I know. My husband, Joey, and his family have also been affected. His grandma, Jeanne, suffered from dementia. We lost her last year to dementia also. She had good days and bad days. Luckily, she was in Charlotte and had a lot of support from family. We will always cherish our memories with her! Globally, dementia affects 36 million people. It is a broad category of brain diseases that cause a long term and often gradual decrease in the ability to think and remember. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer's disease which makes up 50% to 70% of cases.
I'm joining the fight against Alzheimer's disease, the nation's sixth-leading cause of death, by participating in Walk to End Alzheimer's again this fall and I need your support. Together, we can become an unstoppable force against this devastating disease. The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's® is the world's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research.
Love always XOXO -
