This is the third year that I will be participating and raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. I’ve gotten now accustomed to share a story, and this year I’ll turn to the old, and maybe forgotten, epistolary genera where letters are used for story telling. I hope you enjoy the letter to my sister Pilar.
My dearest sister Pilar;
WHAT A YEAR IT HAS BEEN, my goodness, where should I begin? It’s been so rocky in so many fronts, but I will leave those aside and concentrate on YOU. I’d like to believe that you may have a sense, albeit slightest, of what’s happening. But even if you don’t, let us dream. You could have wondered why all of a sudden visitors stopped coming to see you, and for months on no one showed up. “What the heck is going on? Has the world come to an end?” no, Pilar, the world has not come to an end, but safety and overall wellbeing have become paramount for people like you, and frankly speaking, for just about everyone. Hard to understand, I know, but we are riding an ugly storm that set upon us; a storm, the likes of which no one would have ever imagined. But despite these rocky times, that for you began in 2011 when you first were diagnosed, YOU have amazed so many of us. People are able to visit you now, albeit sporadically and for short periods of time, and I could not believe it when I heard you could recognize some folks after months of not seeing them. You know how the saying goes: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going” . My darling, you belong to that group, no doubt about it. For so many years, you’ve been my inspiration, your strength and resilience speak volumes to me, much more so through these crazy times.
We got to keep fighting Pilar, I believe in this fight more than ever before, and that’s why I keep signing up and fund raising for the WALK to END ALZHEIMER’S. My dear sister, this fight may have come late for you and others that are in a similar situation, but it is not late for your children, grand children, great-grand children …so they will not have to go through what you and many others are going through.
Pilar, I mentioned to you people are trying to be safe, that is why this year I will not be calling on everyone to join me for the walk, but instead, and if people feel comfortable, they can walk with small groups of friends or family. For those who would like to make a contribution to my fund raising, they can do so clicking on 'DONATE' button above. Anyone that would like to become a fundraiser for our team they can do so by clicking on the 'JOIN MY TEAM' button. Pilar, what about if we thank everyone in advance for the contributions and support to this cause? THANKS Y'ALL
Hung in there my dearest Pilar, this ugly storm will pass
Love – Sonia
