This is my 4th year walking in honor of my mom, Carol Hilderbrand. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She loved the motto "Live, Laugh, Love" which personified her life.
LIVE - that she did for 60 years with my Dad; they were able to travel and enjoy retirement, which is a dream for most of us these days.
LAUGH - everyday! She had a great sense of humor. She would sew and craft gag gifts; write silly poems, songs and skits; dress up on Halloween; and never forget to call you on your birthday and sing.
LOVE - unconditionally! Each and every one of us, no matter what. Sure she'd get angry or disappointed with us, but we always knew she loved us.
In 2016, when we recognized that my Mom was changing, at the urging of a friend, one of the first places we turned to was the Alzheimer's Association. We scheduled a "care consultation" and received so much information, resources, tips and knowledge in that one hour meeting! It was emotional and overwhelming but it also brought us comfort in knowing that we were not alone.
Over the next 2 years, we used nearly every resource that was offered and suggested, from respite services to support groups to hospice. Church members and friends sent us books and their personal experiences. I had no idea there were so many people affected by this disease. So many similar stories, yet each unique and personal to the family.
Two things Mom never lost were her sense of humor and the love for her family, but in 2019 she lost her life.
I am walking to honor my Mom, support other families that are going through this journey and to fight against this terrible disease. Won't you join me?
Thank you for helping us advance Alzheimer's support, care and research!
