Friends, Family and Neighbors:
There isn't one of us whose life hasn't been touched by neighbors, friends and/or family with Alzheimer's. It's time again to join the Alzheimer's Association South Shore walk to raise awareness of the profound impact Alzheimer's disease is having directly or indirectly on each of us.
Fortunately, the Alzheimer's Association is at the forefront of research, advocacy and services. As I read about the exciting trajectories of current research, I understand that truly effective treatments are years in the future. A broader research attack is needed and that will only come with major amounts of Federal and private funding and the efforts of innovative biotech start-ups and some of the major drug companies.
There's some really exciting news on the legislative front. Governor Baker signed this legislation into law: An Act relative to Alzheimer’s and related dementias in the Commonwealth. The Massachusetts Alzheimer's Association the bill that will require physicians to take continuing medical education programs with curriculum content about Alzheimer's and related dementias for new and renewed medical licenses. Perhaps with greater knowledge, physicians will listen with greater knowledge to loved one's concerns about those memory lapses and out-of-character behaviors.
With these walks, even with this year's virtual walk, as well as many other activities, the Alzheimer's Association raises awareness, and money for research, care and support. Please donate generously so that one day soon Alzheimer's disease will be preventable and that there will be effective treatments and cures. The very good news is that we have the Alzheimer's Association nationwide offering care, education, support and resources in our communities. Additional funding will help keep those incredible programs viable.
To be sure, I have several personal reasons for walking. Look around you; you probably do too. Join us for a virtual walk on September 24th in Plymouth!
