My Why? 1. My mom suffered from this terrible disease for over 15 years. I am choosing to keep the same picture of my mom on his page because it's one of my favorite pictures of all time. Dancing with my mom at my wedding back in 1986. I watched her deteriorate over those years from the loving, intelligent, vibrant, proud, classy woman to a shell of a human that could not function in any capacity for many years before her passing. She suffered from 1998 until she passed in November 2013. Together we are working to find the first survivor to the pain and suffering of those Mother's, Father's, Grandmother's and Grandfather's, Aunt's and Uncle's, Brother's and Sister's affected by this disease.
2. My daughter Kristine joined the Alzheimer's Association as an intern during her undergraduate studies at FAU. Kristine in now a full time employee for the Organization as the Walk Director for the Tampa Walk to End Alzheimer's!!! As a parent we are all proud of our kids and support their chosen careers. This is of course true with both my kids Devin and Kristine. D is following his passion and accomplishing great things in his path with his company Home Depot. K has chosen her path and I am lucky enough to see first hand her drive, passion and commitment for doing her part with the Association. The sky is the limit for her and I am confident that she will do whatever she can to see an end to this disease during her tenure.
3. Getting involved!!! Well, we are all busy with work and family, paying bills etc. Joining a Walk Team is free. Join mine!!! It's a simple as sending a text. Getting involved can mean making a small donation through Facebook or sending the good old fashion check. It's as simple as a couple of clicks. Getting involved can mean participating in a walk and getting others to walk with you-family members, friends, whatever sports teams the kids are involved in, social groups, employers, poker buddies, guys/girls you play golf with, it all counts and it does make a difference!!! The cure is getting closer every year and huge strides have been made just within the last year.
4. Everyone has either a personal connection or knows of someone who has been touched in some way or another by this disease as a patient, caregiver or relation to any combination of these. Kim's maternal grandmother suffered from this disease during the same time my mom suffered. We have had many more family and friends throughout the country who have told us their stories of how they have been affected and how it has touched them deeply.
Thank you for reading my story about my why and how I got involved with this great organization. If I could ask that if you can spare the price of a cup of coffee for a donation or joining my team or getting others involved for a worthy cause please do get involved. You will find it extremely satisfying on a deeply personal level. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
