In 2018 I joined the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's with my husband and our daughter, when I saw my mom deteriorating over the past 3 years physically and mentally. It broke my heart to see my beautiful mom, who was so vibrant, who took care of us 6 children, deteriorate. As the RN in the family living in northern California, and my mom and dad and brothers living in southern California made it difficult to stay on top of her care. Her last 6 months I visited frequently for weeks at a time. As a RN I instructed and wrote care plans for the hired caregivers but all were ignorant of total patient care with proper personal hygiene, feeding, positioning, etc. My mom passed away Sept. 5, 2019, 2 days before the Alzheimer's Walk scheduled on Sat. Sept. 7, 2019. I was in SD with my mom and our daughter attended the Walk to honor her grandma. My heart aches everyday. We need more education to teach and train for proper care to caregivers and family.
