How naïve I was when I came to the Alzheimer's Association over 9 years ago! I didn't think I knew anyone with Alzheimer's or other dementias, and I had the typical perception of the disease as an "old person's" disease that involved loss of memory.
I now know that people are being diagnosed with Alzheimer's in their 50's and 60's, and that the disease is much more devastating than simple memory loss. I have learned that my cousin has been diagnosed with vascular dementia, and that a number of people I know well have been diagnosed or have spouses or parents with dementia. I have seen the heartbreak of spouses and children losing the people they love right before their eyes. This can't keep happening!
Please give as generously as you feel you can. It is imperative that we continue the search for a cure for this horrible disease, as well as continuing the education and support efforts that provide much-needed help to families and friends of those with the diagnosis.
On behalf of the over 5 million people in the US with Alzheimer's, and their over 15 million caregivers, thank you for joining our movement! The end of Alzheimer's disease starts with each of us.
