I am walking this year in memory of my Mother, Shirley Morris, who passed away on March 6th. My Mother's dementia was progressing in the last few years. In the last few months of her life, she looked for her family every night, including her Mother, and always asked about "Going Home."Because of my strong Christian faith, I knew my Mother was ready to leave this world. She has struggled with pneumonia for the last several years and was put on oxygen at night. The constant lung issues and lack of proper oxygen added to the deterioration of her mind. I felt like we were in a endless cycle and decided to bring her home and call Hospice in lieu of another trip to the hospital. She only lasted three days. The doctor assured me that her lungs and her mind were not going to improve. The use of constant antibiotics always caused other issues and only seemed to delay the inevitable. Some of you may be faced with similar situations and I pray that God gives you the wisdom and peace you need to make the right decisions. My family and I cared for my Mother for eight years and we had some good times with her. I know those of you who are current caregivers are having your share of emotions and frustrations, but God will give you the strength to get through it and you will be glad you were there in the end.

I am also walking for my sister and her husband. My brother-in-law is in the later stages of dementia. He is in a hospital bed and not walking any longer. My sister has tried to place him in a facility but unfortunately was not happy with the care he received. He is in his sixties, which is not old to most of us. He is a diabetic. Being recently diagnosed with diabetes myself, I need to pay attention to this condition. I am praying that my sister has the strength to endure this journey.

Lastly, I am walking for all of you who have reason to participate in this event. This disease touches so many lives and so many families. Let's support one another and stand together to make a difference for everyone.
