In 1990 my mother, a once healthy, vibrant woman, who previously ran a household and raised five often rambunctious children, lost her battle with Alzheimer's disease at just 68 years young.
In 1990 and prior, very little was known about the disease. Medications only helped to calm an individiual's mood swings. Today, we know much more, but not yet enough to eliminate the disease. I am fund raising so that future generations will have a cure for this disease and will not be required to witness what my family and I did during the years prior to her death. At that time, the only cure was death itself.
I'm walking to help reclaim the future for millions. By participating in the 2017 Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's, I'm committed to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer research, care and support.
Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
My immediate family as well as members of my extended family have been touched by this disease as individuals who have or had alzheimers, as well as their care givers. This walk raises money not only for individuals with Alzheimers but also for support, education and awareness to help future generations gain more knowledge about how to treat and hopefully prevent the illness.
I need your support to do my part! Please make a donation to help the Alzheimer's Association advance research into prevention, treatments and a cure for Alzheimer's. For the millions already affected by the disease, the Association offers care, education, support and resources in communities nationwide.
