Thanks to the generosity of many people, I have reached my fundraising goal. If you are visiting this page to make a donation, please use the Team Rowekamp link to go to the team page. From there you can get to Mike's walk page - please donate to him instead. Thank you.
I'm walking for Mike, my husband of 38+ years. Together during those years we raised our 3 daughters, watched them grow up, get married, have children. I couldn't have found a better partner, and he is still a wonderful father and grandfather, despite the fact that he doesn't always remember his relationship to them.
There has been a noticeable decline in Mike since this time last year. It's harder for him to comprehend simple directions. He usually asks where the bathroom is. He likes to go outside and clean the weeds out of the curbs but sometimes is walked home by neighbors down the block. I'm not sure if he's told them he doesn't know where to go or if they just want to make sure he gets home OK.
But he still makes me laugh daily. He offers to help out all the time. He enjoys life when he's busy with family or friends. He's still got the same basic personality - friendly, kind, helpful. He tells me all the time how much he appreciates and loves me.
He also loves children, and sometimes we're out someplace like the grocery store and I turn around to find him talking to some little kids in a cart. That's partly why he now wears a button that says "Please be kind. I have Alzheimer's". I hope it helps mothers and fathers and others he spontaneously engages in conversation with understand that he's being friendly, and isn't a threat in any way. I do think it's helped people know how to react to him.
I expect that Mike will need to move to a memory care facility before the year ends, and deciding the timing for that will be the hardest decision I'll have to make. But that's then. I'm going to concentrate on now.
Donations to help in the fight against this horrible disease and to help me meet my goal are much appreciated. Prayers are also appreciated.
Thank you for helping us advance Alzheimer's support, care and research!
