As you may know, in 1994, Jimmy's Buffett's father, James Delaney Buffett, Jr. was stricken with Alzheimer's disease and passed away at age 83 in May of 2003, several years after being diagnosed. It was then many parrot head clubs elected to do something as a tribute to Jimmy's father. Our PHiP chapters not only support Alzheimer's to honor Jimmy's father but because we're seeing this devastating plague insinuate itself into our own ranks. With more than 5 million people afflicted with this disease and a new diagnosis every 65 seconds, if you don’t already know someone with Alzheimer’s disease, you will at some point in your life. What if it's you or someone you care about?
It is estimated that in 2019, Alzheimer's disease will cost the United States $277 billion. This number is projected to rise to more than $1.1 trillion in 2050! As a result, PHiP has set a nationwide fundraising goal of $100,000. Our team has a goal of $2,000 but we’d love to blow that out of the water!
The walk will take place Saturday, September 21 at Arms Park in Manchester. Registration begins at 8:30 AM and the walk steps off at 10 AM. Walkers have a choice of walking .5 miles, 1.5 miles or 3 miles and all walkers who collect at least $150 in donations will get an official walk t-shirt, with other incentive prizes offered the more money that is raised. We hope that you will consider joining our team and adding your support to this important cause by raising funds and walking with us or making a donation…or both! We will be holding some fair share events in the coming months to raise funds for our team as well. We will share the details as soon as they are finalized.
Join us as we walk to honor and remember friends and family stricken with this heart breaking disease and do our part to help leave this world a little better than we found it, with our own personal parrot head flair! The first survivor is out there! For more information, contact our team captain Laura Browning at firstname.lastname@example.org.
