I am participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s again this year to raise funds for the fight against Alzheimer’s. I am doing this in honor of my mother who was diagnosed six years ago. But this year our team, Nancy’s Alzstars, has expanded and includes mom’s entire family. Our team will be comprised of her children, her grandchildren, and even her new great-granddaughter. We will be joined by our church family and friends as well. We are committed to this cause since we have witnessed what this disease has done to so many families..
In this past year Mom's Alzheimer's has advanced to the last stages. We have watched this wonderful woman gradually lose her memories of her life, her family, and her friends .Now she is at a place in the journey that is easier for her thankfully, because she no longer understands that she is suffering from a disease that is slowly destroying her brain and taking away the woman she has been for the last 82 years. Mom loved to have conversations with people and now she has difficulty with mere sentences. She still retains her sweet spirit, her smile, and her caring personality. She may struggle with who someone is, but she wants to know if they have had a good day and loves to hear their stories. We still have moments of joy, especially when she holds your hand and looks at you with that familiar twinkle in her eyes. Then you know she feels your love. Although our hearts ache as we watch this painful progression, we still have happy moments with her and we continue to pray for more of those moments.
Sadly our story is not unique. We cannot understand this journey and only know that God continues to wrap his loving arms around those that are affected by this disease. Families must rely on their faith as they struggle to help their loved ones live as normal a life as possible. Please consider joining our family in this fight by donating to this cause so that someday in the future someone will get to wear the first survivor's shirt, hat, or bracelet. That first survivor will not be my mother but I will continue to fight against this disease even when it changes to be a fight in memory of her life.
Last year we surpassed our walk expectations, so we have set a goal of $10,000 this year! I know, that is a BIG goal. No goal is too high in the search for a cure. Many of you reading this donated last year and we so appreciated your willingness to be a part of Nancy's team. Once again we are asking for support of Nancy's team by your donations and we would love for you to join us on walk day. We can't stop giving to this cause since Alzheimer's still takes so many people each year. We cannot stop until there is a cure. This terrible disease is robbing so many people of their memories daily, so our actions are needed now! Your donation to this cause will be so appreciated today and in the future as we work to find a cure for Alzheimer's.
Thanks so much for your support, Ellen Provenzano
