Dear Friends and Family,
As many of you know, I walk in memory of my dad, James Shives. Dad lost his battle with Alzheimer's on Christmas Eve, 2012. Alzheimer's took everything from my dad, and in the end left him weak and afraid. As my dad's caregiver, it was physically, emotionally, and financially draining for my mom. After 35 years of hard work and sacrifice my parents lost nearly half of their savings as a result of Alzheimer's. Watching my dad suffer from this tragic disease, and the impact it had on my mom and our family, is the reason I am committed to doing my part to support the Alzheimer's Association.
Today, 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's, including an estimated 200,000 under the age of 65. The number of people living with Alzheimer's is expected to reach nearly 14 million by 2050. Furthermore, Alzheimer's is the most expensive disease in America, with an estimated cost of $290 billion to care for people with this dreadful disease. The good news, great strides are being made towards finding a cure or treatment for this disease, giving me hope that someday soon we will have a world without Alzheimer's.
Please join me on Sunday, September 29, for the Northern Virginia Walk to End Alzheimer's at the Reston Town Center. You can walk with me on my team, the Rockin' Purple for Alzheimer's, or form your own by visiting www.alz.org/walk. Together we can make a difference.
