Nonno Angelo passed away on August 26, 2012 after living with Alzheimer's for 10 years. Educating ourselves on Alzheimer's has not made anything easier, but it has inspired us to continue being part of this great movement to take action against this disease that affects so many people every day.
This year marks our 8th year Walking to fight Alzheimers. I would like to kindly ask that you take the time to educate yourself on this disease, and join us in bringing awareness to others. Alzheimer's can be properly defined as a progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. In other words, imagine your most important memories being forgotten, looking at the love of your life and children and having no idea who they are. A person living with Alzheimer's lives in a constant state of confusion.
Everyday we are surrounded by thousands of diseases that take over and eventually take our loved ones away. While it may seem that there will never be a cure for everything, we cannot give up, we cannot continue to let these horrific diseases win and ultimately claim the future for our loved ones.
Nonno was the greatest at being a grandfather to his 11 grandchildren, constantly makes us laugh, having the largest supply of Ricola cough drops in his pocket, and letting us get away with anything that our parents originally said no to. Nonno was also a proud father to his four children, who are all part of this cause in support of him. Lastly, Nonno shared a special and rare love, for the love of his life Dora, also known as Nonna. Their life began together in Caltanissetta, Italy where they worked hard everyday as farmers, and raised their children there until they had an opportunity in 1973 to move to America to give their children a better life. Angelo and Dora enjoyed family traditions, always having their loved ones close by and eventually helping to raise their grandchildren. They also shared a profound love for their puppy "Coco" who played the role of their 5th son. Coco was nonno's side kick and he remained Nonna's companion until earlier this year when he joined Nonno in heaven.
Join our team for the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's, the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer's disease. Together, we can advance research to treat and present Alzheimer's, and provide programs and support to improve the lives of millions of affected Americans.
