When I was seven years old, my grandfather began showing symptoms of dementia. Early on, the symptoms were subtle; he would repeat things he had just said, misplace personal items, and occasionally forget his destination while driving. As time went on, he was diagnosed with mixed dementia, a combination of vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. It was heartbreaking for our family and for me to see our once active, vibrant grandfather deteriorating as he was. I always wished a cure could be found and I could make his struggles vanish. Seeing and experiencing this alongside my grandfather for so many years, and also knowing my grandmother’s life-long friend had passed away too soon in her life as a result of early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease helped me decide to do my high school Capstone Project on this subject. I chose to hold this fundraiser in hopes that I can contribute to the understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and contribute to finding a cure for the millions struggling with this heartbreaking disease and provide the relief I always wish I could have provided for my grandfather.
