As a member of the Denver Walk to End Alzheimer's Committee, I am even more determined to raise money for research so that one day we will find our first survivor of Alzheimer's. We are walking in honor of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, LaVerne, who suffered from dementia the last several years of her life. It was a confusing and devastating time for those who loved her. We hope that one day soon, scientists will find a cure for dementia and Alzheimer's. It is a disease that is often whispered about and many people who have never been touched by the disease have difficulty understanding how heartbreaking it can be.
Research to end this horrific disease is grossly underfunded, so that is why we walk. We walk to raise awareness and give hope and courage to those currently facing this debilitating disease. The Alzheimer's Foundation offers support to not only those facing Alzheimer's, but also their families and caregivers. We lost our father before our mother, and he tried so very hard to take good care of her. We walk in honor also of our father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Wayne.
