This will be my 6th year joining the Walk to End Alzheimer's. This is photo of my dad and mom, Margaret and Martin, shortly after they moved in with me in July of 2012. This was not their plan. They wanted to stay in their own home in Delano and hire caregivers. Well let's just say that didn't work. My dad was already having some memory issues....getting lost on walks, driving in the wrong direction or forgetting how to get where he wanted to go, difficulty with "paperwork", rising at 2 am dressed and ready to go to the ranch. While we don't know if it was Alzheimer's or another related cognitive disorder, the good news is that Martin loved Santa Barbara and spent his last 2 years before his death in December of 2014 enjoying rides in the mountains, sitting on my patio enjoying the sun and shooing away the lizards, the occasional trip to McDonalds for an ice cream, and having my kids, John and Katharine around.
Caring for someone at home is hard. Thank goodness for the Alzheimer's Association and their support and knowledge.
But we must find an end to this awful disease!
