After a couple of years of our family advocating and seeking answers for observed cognitive changes with our dad, in March of 2019, doctors as well as our family were shocked as a PET scan revealed excessive plaque development in the frontal lobe and left temporal lobe of our dad’s brain which confirmed the rare diagnosis of early age onset of Alzheimer’s Disease.
At the age of 62 our dad presents physically healthy with a heart of 35 year old from his love of physical activity and probably from his humor and abundance of positivity, however he presents with debilitating internal struggles with memory, language, and orientation.
Since receiving this devastating news, we’ve learned there is no cure and very limited treatments for persons with Alzheimer’s Disease. As a family, we are navigating the complexity of grief of this new reality together with grace and intentionally embracing every good moment to help carry us through the more difficult ones. Our hope is to sustain the best quality of life for our dad.
If you know our dad you know his genuine love for his family, friends, and neighbors. He brings joy to all with his witty humor, heart of service, and endless encouragement. Our dad has decided to extend his story to our extended community as a hope for a sense of togetherness, more cherished moments, and a better future for others and their families as they navigate the complexities of this relentless disease.
