I walk in honor of all of our family and friends that have been affected with dementia. I walk to fight the terrifying confusion and disorientation they face. I walk to help them remember all the ways that they are loved. I walk for all of the caregivers, and the long, frustrating, sleepless nights. I walk for patience and strength as we continue to navigate the stages of this terrible disease. I walk to remember that when you love someone, you have to do what's best for them even when it hurts so badly. I walk to remind myself it's the disease, not the person, who says hurtful words. I walk for support through the prolonged grieving of the loss of a loved one. I walk because genetics are powerful, but so is modern medicine and science. I walk to increase awareness, because every 65 seconds someone develops dementia (in the US alone!). I walk in hope that our children and our grandchildren will not have to face this terrible disease. <3
