My mom was diagnosed with Young Onset Alzheimer’s disease six years ago. It’s an aggressive form that begins before age 65 and significantly shortens your life and/or quality thereof. It has been beyond devastating to lose my otherwise super healthy, radiant and active mom slowly but surely, piece by piece, with no hope for survival or treatment. As soon as we try to process her current state of this disease, it gets worse. As explained to me on that dreadful day in 2014, your brain controls your entire you. Without it, you lose EVERYTHING. Though my mom is still alive, she is no longer living the beautiful life she created. We miss the vintage version of her very much. Sadly, there are no survivors.
Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
