Sadly, my mom passed away in the early morning of May 2, 2020 from this horrible disease. My heart is broken into a million pieces. I moved her to Michigan last December and hoped she would get to experience a full year here in my beautiful state. But coronavirus snuck into her facility, and a small amount entered her system; which in turn, put her Alzheimer’s into the fast lane. She stopped eating all together the last few days of April and went into hospice care on April 29.
Mom was diagnosed in August of 2017. Prior to her Alzheimer’s diagnosis, we knew something was wrong. She couldn’t recall important things that just happened, and became very agitated easily. Our first experience with “sun-downing” was quite frightening. As the months went by, mom’s mental capacity diminished so much that she would struggle to get the words out of what she wanted to say. When she did talk, her questions and comments didn’t make much sense. We had learned to agree with what she would say, to not upset her.
Up until my mom passed she knew who I was, as well as my siblings. Sadly mom had forgotten that dad passed away in May of 2018. Mom would comment that she hadn’t seen dad and I would tell her, he is sleeping. I know mom and dad are together now and dancing in heaven, like they did the night they met, and for so many years after.
So because of mom, and future generations...
I'm leading the way to Alzheimer's first survivor by participating in my 4th Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®. Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
