Why I Ride: I am determined to go the distance for all those affected by Alzheimer’s. I am inspired by the strength of the more than 6 million Americans living with this disease, and the over 11 million family members and friends who provide them with care.
One individual specifically was my grandpa. Unfortunately, he has passed away, but who he was still sticks with me. My grandfather valued learning. Every chance he had, he would engage in some activity to learn or put his knowledge to work. He helped me with pinewood derby races, with my chemistry/math homework, and he even helped with the electrical work at my parents house during a renovation. As he progressed in having Alzheimer’s, it was difficult for our family to see him decline. All his knowledge, everything he knew was going away. And I can only imagine how hard it was for him. To work so hard, for so long, to obtain all his knowledge, and to have it slowly go away. And everyone who stood beside him, did so unwaveringly. A huge shoutout to my grandmother who day by day saw the progression of my grandpa’s Alzheimer’s, and took care of him. And his children, and his grandchildren, also rose up and stood with him till the end no matter how hard it got. It was truly inspiring to see everyone band together for my grandpa and for each other.
I am also inspired by science. I guess you could say I inherited my grandfathers desire for knowledge. Enough so, that I went into molecular biology research for my career. Right now, there is no shortage of ideas in Alzheimer’s research — only dollars. Which is why I am asking for your support. I am participating in the Ride to End ALZ®, a fully-supported, premier cycling event that supports the Alzheimer’s Association’s efforts to discover methods of treatment and prevention for Alzheimer’s disease. With each mile I ride, I am raising funds to advance research toward the first survivor of Alzheimer’s. No amount is too small! And if you can’t donate, I encourage you to look at the Alzheimer’s Association website for more information and how they are making a difference in millions of lives. As my grandpa would say, “Knowledge is Power”!
Thank you for cheering me on!
For grandpa!
