Why I Ride: I am determined to go the distance for all those affected by Alzheimer’s. I am inspired by the strength of the more than 6 million Americans living with this disease, and the over 11 million family members and friends who provide them with care.
Right now, there is no shortage of ideas in Alzheimer’s research — only dollars. Which is why I am asking for your support. I am participating on the Ride to End ALZ®, a fully-supported, premier cycling event that supports the Alzheimer’s Association’s efforts to discover methods of treatment and prevention for Alzheimer’s disease.
With each mile I ride, I am raising funds to advance research toward the first survivor of Alzheimer’s.
Personally, over the past several years, I have learned how difficult it is for family members and friends to navigate life with a loved one who has dementia. Caregiving is exhausting and thankless. I want to raise awareness and provide support to those just entering this journey as it is a hard and lonely one. I want to share all that I have learned and continue to learn about dementia, caring for someone with dementia and interacting with them. It's overwhelming in the beginning and that still comes in waves.
My mom, Karene, was diagnosed almost three years ago with Alzheimer's. My Aunt Gayla (Mom's sister) was diagnosed about five years ago. Mom and I are so lucky to have wonderful and supportive friends who have been here for us. And through this journey, I have met wonderful people who've shared their stories and experiences that I’ve been able to learn from. My friend, Hope, and I immediately made a connection about 2 years ago – such parallel lives and at the same juncture in our lives. I also ride in her mom’s (Dawn's) honor.
One of the first things I was told when my journey began was "call the Alzheimer's Association Hotline." Best advice EVER! Then that call led to an online support group and is ultimately the reason my life and Mom’s life are as good as they can be. Now here I am, riding to end Alzheimer's.
Thank you for cheering me on and please support this cause as it has become a life-altering journey for me!
Cheer Me On!
