Selfishly I ride because it's fun and because of the ways in which aging can turn from privilege to curse, losing the memories of my life and of those I love is at the top. Altruistically I ride because I want life to be a privilege full of dignity and joy for everyone until the very end. Currently six million Americans live with ALZ and eleven million family and friends help care for them. That's six and eleven million too many, don't you think?
The grassroots fundraising of previous years has helped to fund a string of recent medical breakthroughs. Two very recent developments include FDA approval in 2023 of two drugs that work to remove a specific protein that forms plaque in the brain that exacerbates early-stage ALZ. And this year, in 2024, UTMB, right here in our Galveston, developed a breakthrough nasal spray that also works to reduce the impact of ALZ.
I'm joining my cycling clubs--Major Taylors Houston and Houston Methodist Willowbrook--to pedal the miles on November 9th that will raise more of the funding that science can use to continue detecting, treating, and eventually preventing ALZ so this disease just doesn't happen at all.
Thank you for donating to a body of advocacy and science
that is making things happen!
