Why I Ride: My mom, Dorothy "Dottie" Fitzpatrick Steffens, gifted me with the honor of her close presence in the august of her life. Her last four years brought our family a greater understanding of Alzheimer's Dementia. Not her choice, but she provided unpredicted experiences, opportunities, friendships and the realization of a life absent of memories and how this life is navigated and loved. More recently, our brother Richie was diagnosed with a different type of dementia and resides in a rehabilitation care facility in Auburn, Maine. Although his etiology and progression vary from mom's, pathologic memory loss typically meets the same end.
In years past I have donated to this effort, but this year I was inspired by my cousins, Bill and Kathleen Fitzpatrick, to ride the 30 mile distance. Bill and Kathleen have a long history of participation in this event and my sister, Judy has, for years, volunteered for her local walk in Massachusetts.
We are driven by the strength of the more than 6 million Americans living with this disease, and the over 11 million family members and friends who provide them with care, patience, and love. We are also inspired by the on-going science applied to finding a cure.
June 1, 2024 is the date for the Ride to End Alzheimers which takes place along the coast of New Hampshire. Donations support the Alzheimer's Association's efforts to discover the methods of treatment and prevention for this disease. Your support means so much to me, my family, and all who are impacted by Alzheimers and Dementia.
Thank you for cheering me on!
With Love & Gratitude,
