Why I Ride:
My Mom suffered from dementia and left us September 14th at the age of 85. While an aggressive cancer ultimately took her, the last 6+ years of her life were marked by common symptoms of dementia including short term memory loss, declining cognitive abilities to perform tasks like reading and sewing, both of which she enjoyed throughout her life. The combination of increased calcium in her system caused by the cancer, which leads to a confused state for a normal functioning person and dementia, lead to the last few weeks of her life being a struggle that no one should go through.
She was never officially diagnosed but Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia so I ride for her in the hope that a treatment can be found so we can stop this terrible disease.
I am determined to go the distance for all those affected by Alzheimer’s. I am inspired by the strength of the more than 6 million Americans living with this disease, and the over 11 million family members and friends who provide them with care. I am also inspired by science.
