Thank you for visiting my Ride to End Alzheimer’s Fundraising page. Yes, once again I will head out this spring to ride 100 or so miles in support of this great cause – my tenth year in a row.
This year is particularly special because my mother lost her battle with Alzheimer's this past fall, on September 15, 2021. If I had any delusions as to how rough Alzheimer's can be on a person and their family, they are long gone now. In short, Alzheimer's just slowly takes you away from all those that love and cherish you (and I believe, vice versa).
Can I count on you to support my ride? Any amount will do - $4, $9, $18, $93, $424 - round numbers are fine too!
Your donation is important for reasons beyond the loss of my mother and so many others in the past to all forms of dementia. One in every ten people over 65 have Alzheimer’s and approximately 480,000 people will develop it THIS YEAR alone. And the cost of that? The cost of care for those with Alzheimer’s will exceed a quarter TRILLION dollars this year. Worse, that is projected to quadruple by 2050.
But on the good side, your donation WILL make a difference. When I started doing this ride many years ago the big breakthrough had been a way to diagnose plaque buildup while the patient was still alive. Then it was genetic markers, and today it is a series of drug trials that scientists hope will slow the disease or perhaps even stop it. There is more I've missed I'm sure. Your dollars will go to research to help find a cure.
Thank you for your donation or better still join me and do a bit of fundraising yourself. That said, this year the official ride date conflicts with my 40th college reunion (I have a hard time getting my mind around that fact), so I will once again do a "virtual ride". But it will most definitely be a group ride of some sort, either before the official ride in early June or sometime shortly thereafter. I'll try to find a ride and route that I think my mother would appreciate. And as always, if you donate I'll be sure to send you a post ride review.
