Why I Ride: One of my goals for this year is to participate in the Ride to End Alzheimer’s in honor of my mother, uncle (Richard Mainini) and grandfather (John Mainini). This cause is supporting the Alzheimer’s Association, which is the world’s largest non-profit for ALZ research.
ALZ has personally impacted my life with my mother and both her brother and father. My mother, Antoinette Zuras, suffered for more than 7 years with this awful disease. She was physically strong as an ox and put up quite a fight in the nursing home but her downfall was ALZ. My father covered for her for several years when it came to her memory loss. After his passing, my brothers and I noticed a drastic decline in her memory and mental abilities. Two years into discovering she had ALZ, she no longer recognized us, which was devastating. She held on for 5 more years in an assisted living home and passed away in April 2016.
ALZ is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and eventually, the ability to carry out simple tasks. It is estimated that 5.5 million Americans have dementia caused by ALZ.
On April 18th, 2021, Team DuncZur will be participating in the Ride to End ALZ. We have a goal to raise $2,500 to go towards the Alzheimer’s Association’s research. I will be participating in a “virtual” ride along and my fam will be riding the WO&D trail for 25 miles.
I am posting this to ask for donations to our team! Anything helps towards our goal and the ultimate goals of AA to find treatments, early detection and prevention research. You can donate by visiting http://act.alz.org/goto/chemduncan . We hope to hit this goal by April 1st!!
Myself, my family and all those impacted by this disease appreciate you, and I thank you for taking a moment to read this post!
