My Story

The Longest Day is the day of the year with the most light — the summer solstice. And it's the day I have committed to fight Alzheimer's disease! I’m participating in The Longest Day, a fundraising event to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.  The mantra for this endeavor is "The Day with the Most Light Is the Day We Fight".


In 2020, my family and I lost my mother to this dreaded disease. We watched her go through her "longest days".  After her passing, I decided that I needed to get involved with The Alzheimer's Association to help raise funding for needed research to try to find a cure for this disease.  So, in her honor, I formed the Miles for Mary Lee team, named after my mom, Mary Lee Allen Morrison.


For this year, My Longest Day Team (Miles for Mary Lee) will be once again be doing a fun mountain trail walk at the beautiful Sawnee Mountain Preserve, in Cumming, Ga.  The event will take place on June 15, 2024 from 8:30 to 11:30 am.  If you would like to join our team and walk, please click on the "Join My Team" button on my home page (if you join the team, please share your page you can set up when you join the team.  Then you can help raise funds.  Hopefully everyone that walks will raise at least $100).  If you can't make the walk, but would still like to donate, please click on the "Donate" button.  In 2020, walking alone, I raised over $3,000.  I think with the help of a whole team, we should be able to reach at least $10,000. 


We will also sponsor the 2nd Annual "Miles for Mary Lee" golf tournament (details to be released later).  Last year's tournament was a blast and will be even better this year.


Today, an estimated 50 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer's or other dementias, including more than 6 million Americans. In the United States alone, more than 11 million friends and family members are providing their care. We must take action now, or these numbers will continue to rise.
