This picture is of my parents from my wedding day in 2014. Less than 2 years later my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. After watching her care for her mother and sister who also had Alzheimer's I knew the next years would be challenging. Less than 3 1/2 years later COVID hit, and it would be 11 long months before I got to hold my mother's hand again. She passed away a month later, in March of 2021.

My dad also had dementia. His was diagnosed in January of 2020 after he suffered a stroke. We moved him into assisted living after rehab and a month later, COVID hit. He and mom were in the same building, but they were only able to see each other 3 times in the last year of her life. (Well, Dad would sit outside the door to memory care and watch mom, but she didn't see him). Once mom passed away, Dad only lived 360 days without the love of his life. He passed away in March of 2022.

The Longest Day is the day of the year with the most light — the summer solstice. And it's the day I have committed to fight Alzheimer's disease! I’m participating in The Longest Day, a fundraising event to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.

As I have for the last couple of years, I will be running to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer's Association. People living with Alzheimer's don't get to stop, they don't get a break, they are tired and have to keep moving. This year I am taking on the 3-way with extra cheese challenge at the Flying Pig Marathon. This means I will run the 1 mile race on Friday evening, the 10k Saturday morning followed by the 5k.  I will finish out the weekend running the half marathon on Sunday. 

In the United States alone, more than 11 million friends and family members are providing their care. We must take action now, or these numbers will continue to rise.
