My Story

PLEASE HELP FIND A CURE FOR ALZ

Eight years ago I noticed my memory was not as good as it used to be. Of course, I was getting older and that could have been the case, but I felt the memory loss was more than aging.

At that point I had a career I loved as a Financial Advisor. It was very satisfying to feel you were helping people with their financial future with good advice and guidance. It was a job that can make people's lives and futures better and many of my clients became friends, not just clients.

Once I realized my memory was not as good as it used to be, after a lot of soul-searching, I retired earlier than I planned and began seeking out medical help for my deteriorating memory.

It was a long and frustrating search for an answer, but eventually in 2016 I was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). This is a diagnosis that often leads to ALZ. The testing continued over the next two years and finally a spinal tap showed that I was in the early stages of ALZ.

It was devastating news to receive that my memory issues were not due to aging but to ALZ. Shortly after my diagnosis, my older brother Ray was also diagnosed with ALZ.

Most people with this diagnosis have a max life span after diagnosis of 10 years or less. And the ride is not fun; if you have ever dealt with a person with this disease it is a horrible degradation of their person and the lives of those who care for them. And there is NO hope for recovery.....

I am still getting either the drug or placebo once a month in Florida.  I think I am getting the saline because I cannot remembered my own name most days, can’t remember if I ate (so I eat again), and fortunately, I cannot remember my golf scores.

It’s hard to meet new people when you can’t remember your own name and you know you will never recognize that person again.  I just say hello to everyone I see and let them worry why they can’t remember me…..

It is just like going backwards in life.  Pretty soon I will be coloring with crayons all day (just a joke hopefully) with my grandchildren.  That might be fun!

Watching TV is difficult unless the actors speak slowly, have no accent, and talk in two syllables or less.

I ask my husband every two minutes, “who is that?” “ What did he say? “ Why are the police there?”  “Who was that guy?” but it still isn’t working to make him turn on PBS instead.

My love to all of you working on finding a cure.  Good things and healing will come from your efforts.

Would you continue to help us financially to find the drug that will CURE ALZ, not just delay the destruction?

Every dollar you send is hope for the millions of families that are watching someone they love die a slow and horrible death.

Please be generous and support our team SISU, which will climb a real mountain this summer to overcome the mountain of ALZ. Will you help me reach my goal of dancing at my grandchildren's weddings?

Give generously so many more people can live longer with your help. Thank you.
