I’m participating in The Longest Day, a fundraising event for the Alzheimer's Association, to raise money for, and increase awareness of, the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Longest Day is the day with the most light — the summer solstice. On June 20, thousands of participants from around the world come together to fight Alzheimer’s through a fundraising activity of their choice. I will be participating a bit early, with my gym on June 8, but I'll continue accepting donations through June 20, and working out for as long as my body will let me.

I come from a family full of strong, kind, funny, loving people, and, luckily for me as a woman, lots of wonderful women. One of my favorite late childhood memories comes from when, after my cousin Randi's bat mitzvah, as my grandmother and her sisters and I were heading back to our hotel rooms, we passed a bachelor party signature board and, realizing the opportunity, each signed our names. I loved the idea that the party honoree and his soon-to-be spouse would find so many signatures of women on the bachelor party board, and learning that my family members could be rebellious, and hilarious as well. This is one of so many warm, loving memories I have with family on my mother's side. Some of those family members later developed Alzheimer's and died from the disease. And I know I'm not alone in having lost loved ones to what is undeniably, as my grandfather said when my grandmother had it, a terrible disease.

Donations to the Alzheimer's Association will support families in coping with Alzheimer's, as well as research to help move the world toward a shared future without Alzheimer’s.
