My Story
The Longest Day is the day of the year with the most light, the summer solstice. And it's the day that I've committed to fight Alzheimer's disease. For the fourth year, I'm participating in The Longest Day of Tennis on June 22nd, a fundraising event to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
My family has been affected by Alzheimer's. For me, it was a long journey of watching mom slowly pull away from friends, conversations, and enjoying life, to her passing away two years ago after months on hospice.
This past spring break, we visited my father-in-law, Steve Jenkins, who is in assisted living with dementia and Parkinson's disease. He still has a calm demeanor is excited to be brought take-out sushi and dessert and even responded with one-word answers in German!
This year there have been advances made in research and treatment for Alzheimer's and with every article I read, I gain hope that there will one day be a treatment that will slow or halt this horrible disease.
